exuberantly expressive, intimate style…
gorgeously idiomatic playing’

Louise Williams
viola

The string quartet has dominated Louise Williams’ career. As a violinist she was a founding member of the Endellion Quartet in 1979 and in 1987, returning from travels in India and a year as a gardener, she joined the Chilingirian quartet, reinventing herself as a violist. In 1994, after a pause to have three children, she resumed by stepping in to the Takacs and Lindsay quartets to help out. A long and fruitful quintet relationship with the Lindsays followed, ending with their retirement last year. Finally came a brief fling with the Merel Quartet, conceived at Prussia Cove, which made its Wigmore debut and simultaneous swansong in this formation in October 2005.
