On Tarantella, we get a fascinating collection of more than a dozen 19th- and 20th-century miniatures arranged or written for double bass. Performed gorgeously by British double bassist Duncan McTier, joined by pianist Kathron Sturrock, the music made during this recital will dramatically change your perception about the double bass. From the flowing grace McTier injects into his arrangement of Kreisler's Liebesleid to his spirited bow attack on Reinhold Gliere's Tarantella Opus 9 No. 2, the technique is faultless. The bass sounds perfectly suited to these bonbons, and the recorded sound is excellent. Between the pretty music and the accomplished playing, this creative disc really is a knockout. --Jason Verlinde
